Mobile or motionless traveler, Bertrand de Miollis has the art of summoning our imagination through the force of his paintings, like windows open to the world he perceives: that of a pulsating color. Under his brushes the world sings by a use of vitamins - almost greedy - of color, the universe of the intimate as that of the great horizons is "re-enchanted" in the light of the marvelous and the childhood.

Les portraits peints par Oscar Carvallo se caractérisent par un regard prenant, engageant frontalement celui du spectateur. Sombres ou lumineux, toujours expressifs, ils nous interpellent sans détours. Le public y trouvera, nous l’espérons, les agréments d’un voyage poétique au cœur de l’Antique. Et par la seule force de la peinture, y ressentira toute l’intensité des passions humaines. Rappelons qu’abondance et destin furent liés et personnifiés par les pontifes romains dans la notion primordiale du «sort», alias Fortuna redux. Le romain prie debout, les mains levées, les paumes ouvertes en direction de la divinité comme si, désespérément il s’efforçait de l’atteindre. Par la posture de ses personnages Oscar Carvallo se fait ici romain, unissant son geste à la respectable «piété romaine» émouvante et pourtant si angoissée par l’absence d’un au-delà crédible. L’écho de ses protagonistes échappent à l’espace et au temps.
L’ensemble des portraits exposés ont été peints sur bois mais aussi sur du lin, et réalisés à partir de pigments mélangés à de la cire d’abeille appliquée en multicouches selon la technique dite «de l’encaustique». Ces superpositions de couleurs ont pour effet d’obtenir des teintes raffinées, profondes et délicates, offrant matière et intensité à l’image. Les rehauts d’or quasi systématiques traduisent - paradoxalement -, la précarité de l’existence humaine et la beauté tragique de ses chimères. Ainsi couronnes et parures de joaillerie, coiffes et modes se retrouvent- elles cristallisées pour l’éternité dans l’éclat de ces yeux aimables ou terrifiants. L’or, ce métal inoxydable dont les romains étaient si friands, se fixe sur la toile pour mieux s’envoler par feuilles légères peut-être a contrario de leurs supplications propitiatoires. A travers cette récente passion conduisant l’artiste à peindre selon la manière du Fayoum, Oscar Carvallo exprime une forme de nostalgie face à l’impermanence des choses, au beau qui se perd dans un souvenir ténu, et plus généralement à la dimension mystique de l’art. Finalement l’artiste cherche le grand goût de ce pic de civilisation qui forme notamment les contours et la densité de notre identité profonde. Ici, l’inconscient est à l’œuvre.

The relationship between art and fashion in the creations of Oscar Carvallo, the Venezuelan fashion designer that conquered public and critics around the world, will be offered to the public from 1 to 14 June 2023 in Paris, France. Entitled «Aeternitas, echoes of Fayoum and Pompei», the up-coming exhibition is willing to pay a contemporary tribute to Roman art from Pompei and Fayoum antique cites.

Fashion and art have always had intimate and fruitful relations, accompanying social change and, in particular, the role of women in the world. Born in Caracas, Oscar Carvallo is a fashion designer who challenges things with his original and amusing contents and who, among his numerous artistic collaborations, is associated with Carlos Cruz-Diez, a key Op art artist and colour theorist, to elaborate new collections. This extraordinary encounter has given life to creations titled «Kinetic Journey». Silhouettes and colours occupy space-time, accompany the fluid motion of silks and satins or sculpt bodies in an intermingling of colours that make the senses vibrate and deceive the gaze. Carvallo’s passion for art is linked to his love of Antique periods, pursued with true dedication.
This new exhibition showcases timeless portraits, bestiary and decorative fragmments from the roman empire era, more specifically in the crossroads cities of Fayoum and Pompei. The artist is revealing a sensible series fully dedicated to this event. Small and largescale formats painted on wood panels or linen canvases will unveil his never ending quest for beauty. While celebrating the timelessness of roman art, he keeps questioning our world about existential questions where the mystical dimension of art is at stake.
